and the winner is…

goldmedal-rb

Ladies, gentlemen and small, furry creatures from Alpha Centauri, we have a winner!  Thanks to everyone who contributed a name for my root beer float recipe.  Some of my favorites were Pan Galactica Gargle Blaster, The Pickled Fisheye, Daz Mojo, and Ambrojo.   For some reason, the majority of contestants thought they had to somehow make the name of the drink related to BSG, which I found very confusing since none of the ingredients include sheet metal, Tylium or naked Booomers.  On the other hand, I applaud those who recognized we were naming a root beer float based on the fact that it used caramel ice cream instead of the traditional vanilla (or, I should say, the one  guy who took that into consideration).  Still, try as I might, I couldn’t ignore the clever BSG-related names that you crazy, knuckle-headed Darth Mojo readers came up with!

NSFW: best root beer float ever (updated with contest!)

root_beer_float_1

As I was lying in my hospital bed, mentally skirting the edge of another galaxy (thanks to the combination of two shots of Morpha, Vicodin and a muscle relaxant), I realized that it would be a big mistake for me to die without sharing with the world my own, personal recipie for the Best Root Beet Float ever.  So, dear readers, I now present you with my miracle drink and implore all of you to hunt down the ingredients and indulge…

NSFW

mojous03

Welcome to another edition of NSFW (that’s No Sci-Fi Wednesdays  for the uninitiated), my attempt at bringing you a weekly look at something that has nothing to do with spaceship (click here to see the inaugural post).  This week we have a picture of a pigeon I took at Union Station a few years ago.  Isn’t it lovely?  You can even click it for a larger version.  This post also marks a new milestone – it’s short.  Continue reading ‘NSFW’

introducing: NSFW

pfchurch

It’s a sadly accurate cliche that fans of science fiction (myself included) become so engrossed in our genre of choice that we often forget there’s an entire world to explore, right here on Earth.  To combat this plague of myopia, we’ve decided to launch begin a new series: NSFW (that’s short for No Sci-Fi Wednesdays).   Once a week we’ll ask you to holster your phaser, put down that tricorder and join us for a refreshing trip through inner space.  To start us off I’m going to unload my camera phone’s databank  storage card and share some of the inexplicable wonders I’ve seen around town recently…

everything you always wanted to know about the star wars holiday special but were afraid to ask

holiday_06_luke

My good friend Peter (who writes the best film-buff blog in the business) just sent me this wonderful, in-depth article from Vanity Fair about the making of the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special (for those who don’t remember it, consider yourself lucky).  It’s a great read and full of tantalizing tidbits about the first, official moment in history when Battlestar Galactica was better than Star Wars!

And if after reading that you still hunger for more Holiday Special content (which one fan described as “The great secret of Star Wars; the 3-eyed cousin who lives in the barn attic, humping sheep and eating spiders”)  then head on over to Rifftrax, where the ex-MST3K boys have posted their own iconic commentary on the Holiday Special.  Hilarity ensues.

Q my savior

q1

So for the last week, I’ve been stuck at home with a seriously twisted back and the worst food poisoning my my life.  What happened to my back? Nothing special, every couple of years I just reach for the salt the wrong way an WHAMMO, say hello to a few weeks of poppin’ fresh pain. Then, while recuperating, for lack of wanting to leave the house, I dug a little too deeply into the fridge and ate something that, given a more may days of gestation, probably would have eaten me.  Combine these two goodies and you get an (in)action-packed vacation!

really classic Star Wars

The folks over at Worth 1000 (as in “a picture is worth 1000 words) recently had a Photoshop contest based on this member observation: I went to an art gallery the other day. The artworks were all right, I guess, but you know what they were missing? Wookiees. There wasn’t one Wookiee in sight. Also no Jedis, no Storm Troopers … in fact none of the artworks had any Star Wars elements at all!  And so a call to arms was made to insert Star Wars elements into famous works of art…

earthquake!

My heart goes out to all those in Southern California today who may have had toiletries or nick nacks fall off a low shelf.  The massively unremarkable earthquake had absolutely no effect on Battlestar Galactica.  Click ahead for a video of a bunch of morons doing absolutely the wrong thing in a quake…

movie review: Dark Knight 1 & 2

So I saw the new Batman movies last week (how’s that for timely posting?).  For the most part, they live up to the hype, but naturally I have a few bones to pick.  My friends tell me I manage to find fault with everything, and J-rod (yes that’s a real person) thinks I get some sort of perverse pleasure out of it.  He might have a point, perhaps life would be better if my reaction to everything was “wow, that was neat!” Actually, I saw Thank You For Smoking  over the weekend (starring Dark Knight’s  Aaron Eckhart) and thought it was pretty much a perfect movie, so to my dear friends: bite me.   I’ll stop finding faults in movies when Hollywood stops copiously providing them!  Anyway, on to what I what I thought of the two new Batman movies…

are conventions doomed?

Today I heard about a fan-run convention that announced it was cancelling the event and no longer taking pre-orders; at least they closed up shop in advance of the con – about a month ago, another event shut down during the first day of the actual programming, leaving a whole bunch of people (and guests) high and dry.  So what gives?  Are sci-fi conventions fading away?  I have a few theories about what’s been going on, and the answers may shock you… *

eye of jupiter nachos

This is the most awesome thing I’ve seen since Bottlestar Galactica.  It’s from the Flickr album of some cat called Trioculus and if you click here you can see the full snack bar from one of his BSG viewing parties (he’s also got an algae dip).  Gods, I love this guy.  If any of you think you can beat the Eye of Jupiter Nachos  for sheer originality, send your own clever Galactica/food creations to BSGFood@aol.com and we’ll post them here.  I guess we need a prize… hmmm… how about this: the winner will get an extremely rare, custom made, not-available-anywhere “Cylon Raiders” T-shirt (I can’t publish a picture of it because it’s based on a copyrighted design, but trust me – it’s frakking cool).   Sound good?  Well, what are you waiting for?  Get cooking!

BSG wrap party (aka my canadian adventure) – part one

Some might say it was the most disastrous convention ever; the guest registry at the Sutton Place hotel in downtown Vancouver read like a who’s who of Battlestar Galactica – the writers, producers, cast and many behind-the-scenes artisans were on hand, ready to mingle and reminisce about their experiences on the show.  But where were the fans? movie review: please mess with the zohan!

Super Summer Movie Fun Club, Go!  members did their duty last week and saw the latest new release, You Don’t Mess With the Zohan. All we were expecting from Adam Sandler was a bad movie with a few genuinely funny moments, but Zohan skyrocketed past the Summer of Lowered Expectations to deliver a solid, two-and-a-half star behemoth, chock-full-o-laughs and a surprisingly ambitious story. The only thing weighing it down from reaching the coveted three-star rating was its hefty 113 minute running time, providing even more proof that Hollywood has forgotten its own words to live by, “less is more.” So what gives?  Why have movies gotten so long in the tooth?

crystal skulls and such

How can you resist a review of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull  that begins with “Lucas, Spielberg, Ben Burtt – the legends of film making. The film masters.  Ben Burtt is the guy who did the Lightsaber sounds.”

Ok, so this video review is from some fifteen year old kid in his basement and I really shouldn’t make fun… but come on:  “I like the fact that in the opening, in the military base, they played that music, like in Raiders of the Lost Ark; I was like man, this really feels like a classic film.”  Click inside and watch the video If you want to know how he drew this conclusion: “I don’t usually give a rating, but Raiders of the Lost Ark, Crystal Skull and Last Crusade are all tied.   And the lowest is Temple of Doom.”

A billion points of light

So literally seconds after I had finished writing a follow-up comment to the post below this one (in which I talked about how, under the right conditions, you can see the cloud of the Milky Way from Earth) I bumped into this picture (yes, that’s real).  But this picture isn’t the story – the real story is that the folks over at GLIMPSE (Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire) have used NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope (Hubble’s infrared brother) to create a 5 gigapixel  image of the entire Milky Way galaxy – the largest in history.

movie review: indiana jones and the kingdom of the oh whatever

Ok it’s late.  I saw Indy 4 last night (this morning?) at midnight, didn’t get much sleep and spent the whole day hard at work tossing Vipers around and bitching about the movie.   It’s past midnight now so this will be a short, spoiler-free review, but see the picture up above?  That’s basically how I feel about it…

Unless you’ve either been living under a rock or traveling through space looking for Earth, you’re probably familiar with the “lolcat” phenomenon.  Well, Craig from Puntabulous has cooked up a whole series of lolcats in a BSG stylee!   Continue reading ‘bsg lolcats!’
