We had a gorgeous sunset today in Southern California, so I did the best I could to capture it with my cell phone (click for the full-res, stitched together, panoramic version). Believe it or not, this is exactly what we saw today – no special effects work involved on this one.
[Thanks to reader POLE for downloading and fixing the power lines in the final image, I didn’t even ask!]
Smog CAN be beautiful can’t it? ;)
Wow, that’s gorgous. I’m very jealous, it’s 16F over here and it’s snowing like hell :(
That’s very impressive. You hid the stitching really well. If it weren’t for the bends in the powerlines along the stitches, I’d never know you used a phone camera. Very cool. :)
wow, very impressive for a cell phone camera.
Whatever. That Pollo Loco sign is a 3D model. I can tell by the pixels.
;-)
Hey, Mojo, if you want to see sunsets like this almost every night — without the crappy power lines and industrial buildings everywhere, and with no smog — come up to Portland, Oregon sometime.
I grew up in California and moved up to Oregon in 1994 at age 24. It’s beautiful up here. You couldn’t pay me enough to move back to California! :-)
It is wonderful to see the pictures.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the comments, guys. Yeah the stitching was a pain to hide because of those damn power lines! I find that, in general, cell phone cameras work pretty well when it’s a low-contrast situation. Get your subject out of the sun and into some shade and it will make a world of difference. Check out this image:
No big deal, just a few friends, but it’s a damn good picture for a cell phone. Why? They’re in the shade! Class dismissed.
Well erasing the power lines from the picture is very easy with Photoshop. But then again you would also have to remove the masts and I actually like them. So I tried to paint new power lines. Ah, one more problem solved, hope y’all can sleep better now. ;)

Cool, just like Highlander 2.
Gorgeous photo.
Here in England it’s cold and grey.
Lovely!
POLE: Very nice job! Much better than mine. I agree that the masts add to the picture and your power line replacement really makes the picture perfect. I suggest everone check out his version. If I get the full-res fix I’ll replace it here.
