last night at the dome

Wednesday night was a rare treat – as part of their endeavor to increase visibility of Battlestar  during Emmy judging season, Sci-Fi Channel had an advance screening of Friday night’s mid-season finale, “Revelations,” at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood.  More pictures and totally spoiler-free coverage inside…

This was the lineup outside the dome at about 6pm; fans had been waiting countless hours for a chance to grab seats not taken by the press or VIPs (in this case, the VIPs were members of the Emmy-voting community or the crew of the show, many of whom were in attendance).  Below you can see writer/producer David Weddle (left) and, looming at center behind him, writer/co-executive producer Mark Verheiden:

Before you start rolling your eyes at us Hollywood types for just waltzing in and grabbing seats so rightly deserved by fans, as far as I’m aware everyone got in (the Dome is a big place).  Those brave enough were able to grab a photo with the chief of security, pictured here (click for bigness):

Ron Moore welcomed the packed house and literally had everyone raise their right hand and swear not to spread the secrets revealed in the episode.  And what secrets they were!  Especially the part where – oh wait, you still haven’t seen it yet.  Well, you’ll find out in 24 hours.  It’s a great episode, and I daresay it will be revered as one of the highlights of the series.  Even folks who have been iffy about this season were blown away, happily taking advantage of the much-needed booze afterwards to absorb and discuss the events of the last hour.  But before the mad dash for free drinks, Mr. Moore and several members of the cast were invited to the stage to discuss the show and take questions from the audience:

From left: Katee Sackhoff, Mary McDonell, Tricia Helfer and Ron Moore

All expressed great affection for the show, which is currently shooting the two three hour finale.  Rather than being sad to see it end, the general consensus was a feeling of pride to have been part of such a incredible, unique series.  Mary told of her visit the set of Caprica, where she said the cast reverently views the BSG team as “their parents.”  Ron went into a bit of detail about the fluidity of writing the show, explaining that many of the big decisions about where the story (and characters) would end up were arrived at not necessarily with preconceived notions, but by letting the show itself guide him as it evolved.

Much to the delight of the crowd, it was revealed that the potential DVD movies are still in play, and while the cameras are not quite ready to roll yet, fans should remain optimistic.  The cast then watched “for your consideration” Emmy clips projected directly behind them, creating an eerie moment in which they all looked as if they were on board a Cylon Baseship:

Everyone then shuffled out to partake of the complimentary booze and talk about how awesome it was to see the show projected in hi-def on such a giant screen (judging by this and past events, I wouldn’t be surprised if we had another chance at communal viewing for the series finale).

One last bit of news… composer Bear Mcreary teased me with a hint that die-hard original series fans have a “present” coming to them, hidden somewhere in the last ten shows.   Tomorrow I’m going to do a little digging and see where his trail of bread crumbs leads…

More on this story as it develops!

Awww…maaaannn… that’s just so cool! Why was I not informed of this?!? O_o

Crap, tomorrow I’ll be watching it and then I’ll have to wait until ’09 to see the rest! Crazy network bastards…

Well, I better start buying provisions, it’ll be a long wait for new BSG…

Sounds awesome, both the show and the presentation (and of course, the ladies). The dome is a great theater and would be just right for BSG’s production values. Did I read right: three hour finale? Wow. I just gotta move to LA. Thanks for taking us there, Mojo.

Thanks for your blog! I was at the screening last night and had a fantastic time too. Really enjoyed reading your thoughts and also all the visual effects notes in your blog! Awesome!

You do know that you actually did not enter into a legally binding contract. Rather, what you entered into was an legally uneforceable moral obligation.

Oh, man . . . you lucky dog. Thanks for the awesome report. Like I wasn’t ready *enough* for tomorrow night!

Two/three hour finale? … my gods. If they show that at the Dome, we are SO there.

I am beyond excited by this…I can’t wait to watch the finale. For what it’s worth I blubbed so much at the tenderness of the final scene of ‘The Hub’, and I bet you any money I’ll be blubbing again at ‘Revelations’.
I’m glad there’s a break..I have never loved a show as much as I have loved BSG, I’m going to be seriously depressed when it completely ends, although the prospect of the movies cheers me no end. The break means it gets to last just that little bit longer….I’ve never been such an ardent fan of a show and it will be a real blow to the guts when it bows out once and for all.
If there are movies in the pipeline Mojo, presumably you’d be involved in working on the effects shots for them? (At least I hope so!)

PS I want that centurion on my doorstep to keep annoying people away…har har evil chuckles:)

I just saw the mid-season finale on SciFi.

    Holy frak.

    I mean, … Damn.

How could RDM really think a “raise your right hand” oath would be sufficient?

Can’t wait to be able to more freely discuss it.

Caught the stream on Skiffy today. You should be very proud.

Frak me! I work right next door to the Arclight at Amoeba Music (where BSG has many loyal fans), and a bunch of my coworkers came running up to tell me about the big to-do. I did get to stare lovingly at the Cylon on the red carpet on my lunch break, but that’s about it. If there is a next time, I’m pulling in all my Hollywood favors. I need to be in the frakkin’ house!

I can hardly wait for tonight! Keep up the amazing work!

UPDATE: I have confirmed that composer Bear Mcreary has indeed produced a wonderful “easter egg” for original series fans. It’s slated for one of the final 11 episodes, but I am refraining from providing details because surprises are more fun. Of course, you never know with these things, it might end up on the cutting room floor, but I promise to give everyone a heads up if and when the time comes…

Actually, there *is* another homage that may surface (it has been shot), but I’ll once again hold off on further comment until I know it’s made it into the final episode.

Kitty Otoole – I am so there with you on the ‘bubbling’ for the last part of the Hub, along with the last ep. I have been bracing myself while my guts have been knotted, melted, and torn apart as we approach the end. I really wonder what I will do once this is over as I have never been so completely taken by a series and story. I too will be a depressed kitty. Is someone going to form a BSG anonymous? Hmmm….how long is this break ? (cries) – Help I need a BSG fix again already! (screams)

Hey Mojo, did you hear Ron Moore say at the Q&A session afterward that the ruined city shown at the end of “Revelations” is supposed to be NYC? Someone reported this but there’s a hot debate about it over at the AVS Forum and I was wondering if you could either confirm or deny.

BTW, the long fly-through of the fleet that ended with a sun behind Galactica, the final jump to Earth, the fleet moving toward Earth and the atmospheric entry were AWESOME sfx!! Well done! The music cues really made them awe-inspiring.

I’m hoping it’s okay to post this info since the episode aired a few days ago.

At the Dome Ron did NOT say the city is supposed to be NY. I don’t think he’s said that in any other press, either. That’s all I can really comment on. Keep watching and “all will be revealed.”

I’m glad you liked that “helicopter” shot of the fleet before it jumped, that was one of mine :-)

  18. June 17, 2008 at 5:13 am

The ‘helicopter’ shot really stood out. really nice work!

I would give Gaeta’s OTHER leg to do what you do and to go where you get to go AND to know who you get to know…lucky frakker! :)
